The Academician V.P. Komisarenko - outstanding endocrinologist, pathophysiologist, organizer and one of the founders of the Ukrainian School of endocrinologists - was the founder and the first Director of the Institute. V.P.Komisarenko continued the ideas of V.Ya. Danilevsky and O.O.Bogomoletz and developed many new research trends. The main areas of V.P.Komisarenko scientific interests were the mechanisms of hormone action, interaction of immune and endocrine systems, study of thymus function.

Under the leadership of V.P.Komisarenko, a biologically active hormonal extract - further named “Splenin” - was extracted from cattle spleen; this extract has a high biological activity and treatment efficacy, and ability to increase the disinfectant function of the body, in particular, the liver. Splenin is used for the treatment of more than 20 diseases. Today - 40 years after - the interest in this drug remains unchanged, and scientists continue working at its improvement.

V.P.Komisarenko headed a great research work dealing with the activity of the blockers of adrenal hormone steroidogenesis, in particular, of Chloditane, which is widely used in the treatment of patients with Cushing disease and adrenocortical tumors. For this work V.P.Komisarenko and a group of Institute’s collaborators were awarded in 1975 the State Prize of the Ukrainian SSR. His activities were marked by many orders and medals, such as O.O. Bogomoletz Prize, S.I. Vavilov Medal.

Beginning from 1986 the Institute was headed by M.D. Tronko, specialist in the field of pathophysiology of endocrine system.

Information on the Director of the Institute

Mykola D. Tronko was born on 28.02.1944. He is the Director of the State Institution “V.P.Komisarenko Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the Ukraine”, Doctor of Medical Sciences (1984), Professor (1989), Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (1992) and Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (2010), O.O.Bogomoletz Prize Winner (1989) for a series of works dealing with a study of functional and morphological characteristics of cultured cells of endocrine organs. In 1994 he was awarded the honorary title “Honoured Science and Engineering Worker of Ukraine” for active introduction of new methods of diagnosis and treatment and for his highly professional skill. Together with a group of authors, M.D. Tronko was awarded in 2007 the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of science and engineering for the work “Study of the mechanisms of radioinduced oncohematological and oncological effects of the Chornobyl catastrophe, development and introduction of  new technologies of medical protection of affected persons”. In  2008 M.D. Tronko was awarded the V.P. Komisarenko Prize of Ukraine in the field of pathophysiology, clinical and experimental endocrinology for a series of research works entitled “History of development of endocrinology in Ukraine”.

M.D. Tronko graduated from O.O.Bogomoletz Kyiv Medical Institute and started a postgraduate course at the Kyiv Scientific Research Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism in 1967. Beginning from 1970, he has been working as Junior Research Fellow, from 1974 as Senior Research Fellow of the Department of Pathophysiology. The same year he was appointed Scientific Secretary of the Institute, from 1981 Deputy Director of the Institute for research work, Head of the Laboratory of Hormonal Regulation of Metabolism. Since 1986, he has been the Director of the V.P.Komisarenko Institute of Endocrinology and Metabolism of the Acad. Med. Sci. Ukraine and Head of the Department of Pathophysiology of Endocrine System.

Tronko M.D. is one of the leading scientists-endocrinologists of Ukraine who works fruitfully on the fundamental and applied problems of endocrinology; his research activities cover different aspects of physiology, biochemistry, pathophysiology of endocrine system. He has made a considerable contribution to the study of the effects of radiation factor on thyroid carcinogenesis.

The first months of his position as Director of the Institute – in the hard days and months after the Chornobyl accident – were a trial to M.D. Tronko. Under his leadership dosimetry teams and consulting and medical centres have been organized for determining the functional status of hypothalamic-thyroid and other endocrine systems in children’s and adult population of affected regions of Ukraine. The results obtained served  as a basis for a National Registry of children affected following the Chornobyl accident.

Chornobyl issues became a priority trend of scientific and practical activities of M.D. Tronko. More than 2000 children with thyroid cancer have received treatment in clinical departments of the Institute. A specialized Department of Radioiodine Therapy for detection and treatment of thyroid cancer metastases has been organized. M.D. Tronko is the Director of a Ukrainian-American epidemiological Project (“Study of Thyroid Cancer and Other Thyroid Diseases in Ukraine Following the Chornobyl Accident”) having a great theoretical and practical impact. The results of these investigations are supplemented with new data; a Clinico-Morphological Registry of thyroid cancer in persons who were children and adolescents at the time of the Chornobyl accident for the period 1986-2001 has been established at the Institute.

Under the leadership of M.D. Tronko a State Programme for prevention of iodine-deficient diseases has been developed and approved, and examinations of the population to detect iodine deficiency have been carried out throughout the Ukraine.

M.D. Tronko is the President of the Association of Endocrinologists of Ukraine, President of the Ukrainian Diabetes Federation, Head of a specialized Council for defence of theses in the field of endocrinology, Head of the Scientific Board “Endocrinology”, Head of the Department of Endocrinology of P.L. Shchupik Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education of the Ministry of Public Health of Ukraine, member of the Scientific Council of the Presidium of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine for Theoretical and Preventive Medicine, member of the Coordinating Council (attached to the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine) for the issues of liquidation of iodine deficiency among the population of Ukraine, Chief-Editor of the journal “Endokrynologia” (Endocrinology), member of editorial boards of a number of medical journals and newspapers, member of the European and American Associations for the Study of Diabetes, European Thyroid Association, and other endocrine societies.
